We can’t control hurricanes, and we can’t control inflation, but I’m glad to see that the legislature tried to take some steps to control fraud and litigation with their reform packages earlier in the year.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve seen more news reports about the home insurance crisis. It is hard to get my head around all the reasons for it, but overall, it seems that hurricanes, inflation, fraud, and lawsuits are the big ones.

It is easy for us to just blame insurance companies. It seems like that has been the strategy for many years now, but as more and more of them have left the state, we all get left with Citizens Insurance as our only option, and that stinks. I don’t have any doubt about the lawsuit problem. Everywhere you go, here seems to be another lawyer peering at you through the window of your car telling you that everything will be ok if you just sue someone.
That had to change. Every time someone sucks another frivolous settlement out of an insurance company, it makes all of our rates go up. I hope that over the next year, our rates will settle down and more companies will come back into the Florida market.
Competition is good for everyone.
