Orange County commissioners gave a final OK on Tuesday to the School District’s plan to build a new middle school in the east Orange community of Avalon Park. The two-story school, expected to open in the fall of 2017 in the Timber Springs neighborhood, will be designed for 1,215 students in the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grades.
It will offer relief for A-rated but overcrowded Avalon Middle School which has more than 1,800 students. The commission rejected the district’s initial proposal in May, partly because the 16.7-acre site was considered too small for a middle school under county rules.
