Canvs, Orlando’s first nonprofit coworking space aimed at helping tech startups, is planning to open by July. Founder Phil Holt said the company recently finalized the lease at the Church Street Exchange Building, 101 S. Garland, which has been largely vacant for years.
Shared coworking spaces are a big trend around the United States and other western nations, with publications like Mashable and Forbes noting the increased number of such office facilities starting in early 2013.
The Canvs project aims to spark new energy in startups and in the Church Street area of downtown Orlando. Jones Lang LaSalle is handling leasing in the building.
“We’ve expanded already from our original footprint, adding 3,500 square feet,” Holt said. “The total is now 17,069 square feet, with about 165 desks planned.”
Holt said his rates would be similar to national tech coworking spaces. Locally, other shared workspaces are charging about $200 a month for a reserved desk, and about $100 a month for a floating or unreserved desk.
