Following Almost “Massacre” at UCF, Fairwinds Fundraises for UCF K-9 Unit

FAIRWINDS Credit Union is lending a helping paw to the UCF Police Department’s K-9 unit.  On Wednesday, March 27 from 7:30 to 9 a.m., the FAIRWINDS branch on the UCF campus will show support for the UCF Police Department by hosting a breakfast to benefit the K-9 unit.

The event is part of a community effort to raise $50,000 for the UCF PD to purchase, train, and retrofit a vehicle for a K-9. A new K-9 dog will help keep the UCF community safe by detecting explosives and tracking missing persons and suspects.

Major Randall Mingo of the UCF PD said, “The university growth both in population and physical buildings has placed increased calls for service on the UCF Police Department. Many of the calls for service involve suspicious packages and threats involving community safety, much too often requiring the use of K-9s in reactive and proactive searches. The lack of available K-9s to meet demands is a community concern and, with your assistance, a community solution.”

“The opportunity to help support the men, women and K-9s that protect our community every day is a privilege,” said Kate Renner,  FAIRWINDS’ Vice President of Marketing, “We’re glad to be able to do our small part.”

Considering what “almost” happened recently on the UCF campus, it’s great to see a local business stepping up to help improve security at UCF. If you would like to submit a press release or news tip, email us at
